As I was navigating the internet today at work I noticed a new Google feature that seems rather interesting: Google has released the beta version of their https encrypted search website. Google probably didn’t encrypt their searches from the beginning due to the increased overhead of the https protocol. After several test searches I cannot [...]

The Conference mailing list server is down again. I’ve been monitoring disk utilization on the list server for awhile now in an attempt to keep the server up until after the building move. Once I realized that we were going to run out of space again I decided to take the server down preemptively. We [...]

Annual Conference is over! This was a very good year. All of our systems functioned properly throughout and we had an extra day to set up our operations. The extra day really helped us with making sure that everything was working before we got started. From an operations standpoint I hope we never lose that [...]

While managing the network infrastructure at our Annual Conference I have run across a weird redirect issue. All of the computers in the News Room running Windows XP, Vista and 7 started redirecting to MySpace pages. In the beginning it was redirecting to an actual profile. After an hour or so the website started returning [...]

We have spent the last two days working to set up the technology infrastructure for our 2010 Annual Conference. After this initial work is complete I spend the rest of the week sitting in the back waiting for something to break. I also help manage the live video stream and any miscellaneous work that needs [...]

We have been working over the last few months to set up and deploy Google Apps to all of our various e-mail users at work. In case you have never heard it before Google has bundled many of their online offerings (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar and Google Sites) into a company branded version that [...]

I have been working with AT&T to complete our bandwidth upgrade at the home office. The project took a lot longer than I had originally hoped and we ran into several unforeseen issues. It’s finished now though. It’s fast too!

Google is taking a courageous stand against China. Good for them! We launched Google.cn in January 2006 in the belief that the benefits of increased access to information for people in China and a more open Internet outweighed our discomfort in agreeing to censor some results. At the time we made clear that “we will carefully [...]

After writing my earlier post on the demise of Geocities I spent a few minutes poking around Google to try to find some of my old stuff. I stumbled across this long lost e-mail! Back in college I tried to start an online newsletter for aspiring writers. The newsletter didn’t make it long term so [...]
